Additional notesSCHOLEMOOR CEMETERY Scholemoor Cemetery opened in 1860 and is located in the Lidget Green Area of Bradford. The cemetery is one of seven in the Bradford locality but is far the largest, with the greatest number of burials today (112000 interments to date). Approximately 420 interments annually. A walk around the 36 acres of the cemetery also provides a brief but interesting history of Bradford?s social, political, cultural and economic changes since the 19th century. Many of the memorials refer to those who worked in the once thriving textile industry in Bradford and those who fought and died during the 1st & 2nd World War. The graves also provide a factual record of the various communities who have lived in the city, and the many that continue to do so. Recalling the periods when the early Jewish and Eastern European immigrants came here to the more recent settlers from the Indian Subcontinent. SCHOLEMOOR CREMATORIUM Cremation came to Bradford in 1905 when the crematorium, designed by the City Architect, F. E. Edwards, F.R.I.B.A. was opened at a cost of ?5,426. The First Cremator was designed by Messrs. Toiscul Fradet and Company of Paris, at a Cost of ?792 and the lines which the introducer ran along are still in the floor of the crematory. Since that time various cremators have seen service here and the present ones were installed in 1997. Over the years the crematorium has been extended, 1952 saw an extention to the crematory making it possible to install three cremators. In 1962 along with modernisation of the Chapel, a Waiting room and Book of Remembrance Hall was built, so improving facilities for the public while attending services. In July 2005 work has commenced on the construction of a Port Cochere and Undercover floral display area. Work should be completed by November 2005 To date over 112000 cremations have taken place, the yearly average being 1600, and 70% of all funerals end up being cremations.
