Additional notesHeadstone with the poet Robert Burns' parents' names, his father was buried here but his mother was interred in Bolton Cemetery, East Lothian. Kirk Alloway was built in 1516 on the site of an earlier church. As well as choosing to inter his father here, Robert Burns also used the Kirk as the setting for his well-known tale 'Tam O'Shanter', in which the hapless Tam encountered a satanic ritual in the ruins of the old haunted Kirk.
